In 2003 Ed led two relay teams from St George’s Hospital to swim the English Channel. Raising in excess of £8000 for Wateraid and the National Association of Swimming Clubs for the Handicapped both teams were successful. The summer was unusually warm and Ed’s team took to the water during a warm spell. It was a balmy 18.5°C which made it a lot easier for the team. Despite the tailwind the sea was less than calm and half the team spent the entire journey with severe sea sickness. A strong team spirit and leadership got them through and after 11 hours 42 minutes they eventually finished swimming in the darkness of the night to reach Le France.
